There have been multiple reports of this issue, particularly from schools, over the last 10 years:
From a recent user's report:
Setting project path so that every time a user starts Unreal Engine the project path is set to N:\ and the failed to process config file error is corrected. I believe this could be because Unreal Engine isn’t liking the redirected profile path to the document drive. On our environment we have Desktop and Documents folder redirected to a Distributed File Server share path. It is a UNC e.g. \\bcotac.local\StudentData\2024\%USERNAME%\Documents. Unreal Engine Editor doesn’t like the redirected Documents path which is a UNC path. There is a work around but we have to manually browse. I have gone through forums and reddit posts and haven’t been able to find a variable that can be set on the configuration .ini files to set a default project path that would work. We would like to set this on the system environment variables for all the PCs in our Art & Media so students wouldn’t have hassle of browsing manually to the Home Folder Drive. Screenshot 1: When students open Unreal Engine and try to create a project the path it picks up is the UNC path to the Student’s Document drive or the home folder which is mapped to N:\ Screenshot 2: We then manually change it to N:\ by typing it and when creating the project it comes up with the following error Screenshot 3: It only works if we browse for the location and select the redirected Documents folder that is mapped to N:

Repro 2:
Actual result: The project cannot be created if the file path to the network drive is not selected through the browse for a folder icon.
Expected result: The project can be created without needing manually select the file path through the browse for a folder icon.
