Shadows will generally affect the lighting of dynamic objects (so a character doesn't glow in a cave) but you won't see a correct shadow on the character.
When placing a Static mesh into a level that will cast a shadow and building lighting, no shadow will be shown on a character when walking through its shadow
1) Open a Third Person template project
2) When the project opens, Locate the content browser in the Editor
3) Locate a static mesh in the Browser and place a static mesh into the level
4) Be sure that the static mesh is casting a shadow within the level
5) Click the build button in the editor toolbar to rebuild lighting
6) Once light is built, Select the dropdown next to play
7) Select the Mobile Preview so that the level will play for mobile
8) When the preview loads, Walk you character into the shadow that is being cast from the mesh
Results:
No shadow will appear on the character when they walk through the area
Expected:
A shadow should be shown on the character when they walk through the shadow cast from the static mesh
